To broaden and develop our teams’ collaborative skills while offering visiting students the chance to expand their scientific networks and gain cultural experiences, BRT encourages students to join our team for internship opportunities. These internships aim to facilitate idea exchange, foster professional growth, and create opportunities for collaboration.
Meet our summer intern joining our team from the United States, Abby MacLean!
Hello! My name is Abby MacLean, and I am from the United States. I grew up near Denver, Colorado and I am a rising Junior, completing my bachelor’s degree at Rhodes College in Memphis, Tennessee. I am majoring in Mathematics and Economics, and I am interested in the connection between the two disciplines!
In my collegiate education thus far, I have enjoyed learning about mathematical and statistical techniques that give the power to better understand all different types of data. I find it so interesting how mathematics can be used as a tool to further understand any given academic field. In my case, I have focused on how it can be applied to understanding economics. As an example, at Rhodes College, I am researching changes in market concentration in the airline industry in the years surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic. Upon graduation, I hope to pursue a PhD in Economics so that I may have a career researching different market phenomena. Overall, I would like to utilize my mathematical background to contribute to a greater and more precise understanding of the economic problems facing the world today.
Besides my academics, I enjoy running, baking, reading, and going on adventures with my friends and family. I grew up near the Rocky Mountains which gave me lots of appreciation for the outdoors, so I also love hiking and skiing! I am on the cross country and track team at Rhodes College and love getting to go to practice every day to run with my friends and teammates.
I am so excited to be joining the Biogas Research Team this summer! I chose to come to this team specifically because I found the research regarding sustainability and biogas energy production to be fascinating and vital to sustaining the best version of the world for many generations to come. I am looking forward to learning more about all the projects that the Biogas Research Team is involved in! Additionally, I appreciate the interdisciplinary nature of the research team. The research is not solely focused on the science behind sustainable technology or solely focused on the implementation of this technology. Rather, it is all researched in combination with each other. Also, I was very excited about the opportunity to spend my summer in Prague as it is such a unique and beautiful city that I am so lucky to explore!
Throughout my internship, I will be working on some of the data analysis and contribute towards research regarding the economic implications of the sustainable technologies researched here and how they may be implemented. I am also looking forward to helping wherever I am most needed to be useful to the team. I am so excited to be a part of this innovative research team and I cannot wait to see what this summer will bring!
