BIO-CAPITAL Project Meeting at CZU!

Last week, the BIO-CAPITAL project consortium convened in Prague, marking a pivotal moment in the project’s journey. Hosted by the Czech University of Life Sciences Prague (CZU), the meeting served as a crucial bridge between foundational research and the next phase of integration! BRT Director Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hynek Roubik is serving as project coordinator and lead of WP1 whose objective is to coordinate and manage the implementation and progress of the project.

As a partner in the BIO-CAPITAL project, CZU is working with 16 other research institutions and companies from 13 countries to develop financial instruments that put private investment at the service of biodiversity. Nature provides the foundations of our lives and the raw materials of our economy. It is biodiversity that ensures balanced, stable and resilient ecosystems. We need to be able to rely on ecosystem services. Protecting biodiversity is therefore as important as protecting the climate. The EU has set itself the target of halting biodiversity loss and restoring damaged ecosystems in Europe by 2030.

The Prague meeting highlighted the need to connect expertise and tools across disciplines, geographies, and innovations. It brought together five real-world Use Cases across Europe, each addressing biodiversity challenges in diverse landscapes, from Alpine forests to UK wetlands. Satellite-based monitoring and geospatial analytics are providing a data-driven foundation for informed decision-making, while innovative financial instruments, including biodiversity credits and payments for ecosystem services, are designed to unlock sustainable investments in nature. With these building blocks in place, the focus now shifts to aligning efforts and ensuring that innovative solutions translate into actionable investment pathways for biodiversity protection.

Stay tuned for more updates as we continue to build pathways for biodiversity resilience!
