deSalSea Project Continues Building International Cooperation in Sustainable Desalination Research

The Czech University of Life Sciences Prague (CZU), represented by BRT Director Assoc Prof Dr. Hynek Roubík and head of BRT lab Dr. Viktoriia Chubur from the BRT, is a partner in the deSalSea Project, an international research initiative focused on advancing sustainable seawater desalination technologies through forward osmosis (FO). The project brings together leading research institutions from Spain, France, and the Czech Republic to develop innovative, energy-efficient water treatment solutions.

Within the project, BRT contributes to the evaluation of the environmental, energy, economic, and social dimensions of the developed FO technology. This includes analysing energy consumption and efficiency throughout the desalination process, assessing the economic feasibility and competitiveness of the system compared to conventional desalination technologies, and evaluating the potential social impacts and acceptance of the technology. BRT is also responsible for conducting life cycle assessment (LCA) analyses using SimaPro Expert software to assess environmental impacts across the technology life cycle and identify opportunities to improve sustainability and resource efficiency.

Recently, the deSalSea Project consortium successfully held two online coordination meetings to monitor project progress, review deliverables and milestones, and plan upcoming activities within the project framework.

The first coordination meeting brought together representatives from all partner institutions, including the University of the Basque Country (EHU), Donostia International Physics Center (DIPC), Institut Européen des Membranes (IEM-CNRS), and the Czech University of Life Sciences Prague (CZU).

The meeting opened with a welcome by Prof. Radmila Tomovska which included a presentation of the project website, followed by individual partner updates regarding the progress of planned activities, deliverables, and milestones. This included presentations by the BRT team about work package activities and ongoing contributions to project implementation.

The second coordination meeting was organised online last month in April and continued discussions on project development and future planning. Consortium partners again presented updates on their respective project activities, focusing on achieved progress, upcoming deliverables, and coordination of future research tasks.

During the meeting, BRT representatives provided updates on project implementation progress and ongoing activities related to the planned objectives and milestones. The discussions also addressed future collaboration steps and coordination among partners to ensure effective project development.

The deSalSea project continues to strengthen international scientific collaboration among partner institutions from Spain, France, and the Czech Republic, supporting the development of innovative and sustainable approaches in forward osmosis and desalination technologies.
