Meet our new intern - Katie Jacobs

To broaden and develop our teams’ collaborative skills while offering visiting students the chance to expand their scientific networks and gain cultural experiences, BRT encourages students to join our team for internship opportunities. These internships aim to facilitate idea exchange, foster professional growth, and create opportunities for collaboration. Meet the new intern joining our team from the USA, Katie Jacobs!

Hello, I’m Katie Jacobs. I am from Cincinnati, Ohio in the USA. I have a B.A. in Biochemistry from Earlham College and am currently studying at Czech University of Life Sciences, Prague (CZU) for a Masters in Agrifood Systems and Rural Development.

My professional experience has focused on agroecology, waste valorization, and soil fertility. After graduating, I worked in a lab studying the impacts of cover cropping on nutrient cycling. Interested in the potential of organic fertilizers, I founded a community vermicompost business. I was awarded an international fellowship and, inspired by my business, studied different methods for collecting and utilizing organic waste. During my travels, I became increasingly interested in the use of agrowaste to improve soil fertility and increase food production in low-income countries, where small farmers struggle to afford sufficient fertilizer.

This past year, I volunteered in Malawi on a permaculture farm learning about alternative farming methods in the tropics. I started pilot projects creating alternative animal feed (black soldier flies and azolla) and growing oyster mushrooms from maize residues. The experience reinforced my fascination for new circular farming methods and my deep appreciation for farmers.

When I’m not traveling or hanging out on a farm, you can find me spending time with my family (including our dog, Leo), perusing the local plant nursery, cooking new recipes, going camping with friends, and visiting the library to binge-read books.

I want to join BRT to learn more about research at CZU, meet new people, and expand my laboratory skills. As an intern, I will gain experience in seed germination testing, a new methodology for me! I love the hands on nature of lab work and look forward to rolling up my sleeves.
