Reducing Food Loss and Waste – Youth Hackathon winners at FTA!

Jan Staš, a member of the Biogas Research Team (BRT), has just returned from Sanya, China, where he represented his team NOSATOR-FLOW in receiving their award for their outstanding success in the food waste solution competition.

The competition, themed “2022 Youth Hackathon for Reducing Food Loss and Waste”, is the fruit of the collaboration between the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations China Office, the Department of International Cooperation of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (CAAS), the Center for International Agricultural Research of CAAS, and the Young Professionals for Agricultural Development (YPARD).

The awarding ceremony took place during the 7th Global Forum of Leaders for Agricultural Science and Technology (GLAST-2023), which was held in Sanya, Hainan Province of China, on October 25-28, 2023, with a focus on “Science and Technology Leading the Transformation of Global Agri-food Systems”. The GLAST-2023 seeks to offer a premier dialogue and exchange platform for senior leaders of agricultural technology institutions and international organizations to promote sustainable agricultural development through technological innovation amidst the immediate aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic. While the world is facing numerous challenges affecting global food security, over 580 delegates from more than 50 countries worldwide, spinning government departments, agricultural research institutions, and 16 international organizations to GLAST-2023 and its 6 side events explored a broader, higher-level and more in-depth new paradigm of open cooperation in agricultural science and technology.

All winning team leaders were invited to participate in this spectacular event and to receive the award in person. You can read more about the event HERE.

The competition took place in the second half of 2022, with more than 60 teams from 21 countries. After three rigorous selection rounds, nine teams emerged as the front-runners in three categories: New Service, New pattern and New technology. The  NOSATOR-FLOW made it to the top 3 with their project proposal called “Novel systemic advisory tool to reduce food loss and waste in Cambodia” in the category of New Services. The team comprised five young scientists: Jan Staš (team leader), Viktoriia Chubur, Kseniia Paramonova, Chama Theodore Ketuama, and Eduardo Duque Dussan.
