Training Visit to Environmental Problems Research and Application Center, Mugla Sitki Koçman University, Mugla, Turkey

BRT Senior Researcher Associate Professor Dr. Yelizaveta Chernysh, had the opportunity to explore advanced analytical methods at the Environmental Problems Research and Application Center of Mugla Sitki Koçman University during her training visit in March 2025.
During the visit, Yelizaveta engaged in discussions with the Center's director, Prof. Dr. Ahmet Demirak, and the research team regarding potential collaboration in mineral waste recycling. She delivered a presentation highlighting the MSCA4Ukraine project “Phosphogypsum as a mineral resource for bioprocesses”, showcasing innovative approaches to utilizing this industrial byproduct.

The main research activities of the Environmental Problems Research and Application Center team focus on environmental monitoring, wastewater treatment technologies, solid waste management, and pollution control strategies. Their work integrates multidisciplinary approaches to address contemporary environmental challenges, emphasizing sustainable and innovative solutions for industries and municipalities.

Dr. Chernysh also underwent training in atomic absorption analysis for heavy metals in various samples, gaining hands-on experience with modern laboratory techniques. Furthermore, she familiarized herself with the protocols for Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD) assessments in wastewater and actively participated in setting up an experiment on soil remediation through the application of thermal power plant ash.

Throughout the visit, promising avenues for future cooperation were identified. Among these avenues are topics related to: anaerobic digestion of fish farm waste and the potential application of additives derived from phosphogypsum and marble waste in environmental remediation processes. These collaborative efforts aim to enhance sustainable waste management practices and contribute to the development of eco-friendly solutions.Dr. Chernysh’s visit to Mugla Sitki Koçman University marks a significant step towards fostering international scientific cooperation in environmental research and waste management.

Yelizaveta Chernysh acknowledges the support of the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Postdoctoral Fellowship (MSCA-PF) with funding from the European Union under the MSCA4Ukraine framework.
