Visiting Internship Insights – Mihir Gandhi
I am very happy with my time with the BioResources and Technology Division (BRT). As an intern, I was able to gain valuable new skills and fresh perspectives that I know will stay with me throughout my career. Most of my work was with BRT junior researcher Adam Hruška on the usage of AI in farming, where I supported two projects, a weed detector mobile app and teaching an AI to detect garlic. Some of my tasks included sorting and annotating data, and debugging the weed detector app.
It was surprising to see how much data is needed to teach an AI model how to detect types of crops in photos. It was also fun to try different solutions to debugging the mobile app even if most of the solutions did not work. I found it really interesting as it brought in my interest in Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence.
The thing that I found to be the most exciting is working in a team of people from all around the world who grew up and have lived in many different environments. It is fun to see and learn people's perspective on problem solving or everyday challenges. Especially because I learned how important it is to have people with first hand experience in the infrastructure for the consumers of what we are trying to create. It makes me have to come up with more creative solutions than I otherwise would have.
Overall, I’m so grateful to the BRT team for welcoming me into their community. My time at BRT has left me excited and motivated for the next steps in my career journey.
