BRT Researchers Appointed Guest Editors for Special Issue on Organic Waste Valorization

BRT Director Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hynek Roubík and BRT postdoctoral researcher Dr. Sandipan Banerjee have been appointed as Guest Editors of a new Special Issue in Environments.

The Special Issue, titled “Organic Waste to Energy and Nutrients: Sustainable Technologies and Systems for Circular Agriculture,” focuses on technologies and approaches that transform agricultural and biodegradable organic residues into renewable energy, recycled nutrients and other valuable resources.

Large quantities of crop residues, livestock manure, food waste and agro-industrial residues are generated through agricultural intensification and urbanization. When poorly managed, these waste streams can contribute to greenhouse gas emissions, eutrophication and soil degradation, while also representing an important resource for more circular and sustainable agricultural systems.

The Special Issue will cover topics including anaerobic digestion and biogas upgrading, nutrient recovery from digestate, manure and food waste, biochar, carbon sequestration and soil amendment, as well as life-cycle assessment and techno-economic modelling. It will also explore microbial community dynamics and emerging genomics approaches related to organic waste transformation.

Contributions assessing resource recovery efficiency, greenhouse gas mitigation potential and the scalability of waste-to-energy and nutrient recovery technologies are particularly encouraged.

The submission deadline is 25 February 2027.
