Celebrating women in science – A message from the head of the BRT

As the head of a multidisciplinary, international, and gender-inclusive research team, I feel a deep sense of pride and admiration for the remarkable women who contribute to science. International Women's Day seems like an opportune moment to acknowledge the invaluable contributions of female scientists and researchers, both those in the BRT, those who shape minds and career paths at universities, those in research centers, the private sector and women in history as a whole.

I believe that a research team and any workplace should foster an environment of inclusivity and equality, where everyone, regardless of gender, feels empowered to pursue their passion and fulfil their full potential. International Women's Day serves as a poignant reminder of the equal value, knowledge and skills women bring to the workforce.

I am fortunate to work alongside incredibly talented and dedicated females who continuously inspire me with their intellect, creativity, and determination. From conducting groundbreaking research and mentoring the next generation of scientists to enhancing the achievements and impact of the BRT, these women play a pivotal role in shaping the future of our research team.

As we celebrate International Women's Day, we should also highlight and showcase women's significant and extraordinary scientific contributions in history. From Rosalind Franklin's pioneering work in DNA structure to Marie Curie's groundbreaking discoveries in radioactivity and many more, women's historic achievements serve as a beacon of inspiration for generations of scientists to come.

As a man and a scientist, I express and extend my unwavering and continuous support to all female scientists in any field and career stage. Gender equality in science is vital for sustainability and for achieving and enhancing scientific discoveries. Unfortunately, I know that women and girls continue to face systemic barriers and biases that prevent them from pursuing careers in science or receiving the recognition and rewards they deserve for their scientific discoveries. I hope that, at least in a small way, I contribute to changing this social construct through the gender balance and dynamic in our research team.

On this International Women's Day, let us reaffirm our commitment to gender equality in science and beyond. Together, we can create a more inclusive and diverse scientific community where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.

Happy Women's Day to all the phenomenal women in the BRT, science, and beyond!

"Women need Science & Science needs Women

Yours truly Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hynek Roubík
