New Interreg project starting! BIOECO-UP kick-off meeting in Hungary

The bioeconomy concept seeks to replace fossil resources with renewable raw materials in as many areas and applications as possible. The BIOECO-UP project widely establishes this concept across central Europe. The BIOECO-UP will design new circular value chains for the bioeconomy and change consumer behaviour. BIOECO-UP will also support the policy level to push ahead with the transformation.

On April 25th and 26th (2023), the kick-off project meeting for BIOECO-UP was held at the Ministry of Agriculture in Budapest, Hungary. Representing Czech University of Life Sciences Prague was Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hynek Roubík. The meeting was attended by consortium partners from countries in the Central European region, who came together to present their work plans, discuss project content and explore potential areas for collaboration. This project brings together 12 partners organizations and 5 ministries from all across Europe.

The meeting began with an initial presentation by the Interreg Central Europe Joint Secretariat, which provided an overview of the program rules. Following this, consortium partners presented their organizations and areas of expertise, setting the stage for discussions on the project's content and objectives.

The first day of the meeting focused on Work Package 1, which aims to map the bioeconomy potential in the region. This involved a presentation of the concept and work plan for the first six months. Discussions also centered on the development of draft procedures for bioeconomy intersectoral cooperation.

On the second day of the meeting, the focus shifted to Work Packages 2 and 3. Work Package 2 aims to improve citizens' knowledge about the bioeconomy, and empower them to produce their own biobased products. Partners presented their concept and work plan for six months, including testing plans and timelines.

Work Package 3 focuses on analyzing circular bioeconomy measures, with the goal of identifying opportunities to reduce waste and increase resource efficiency. Partners presented their concept and work plan for the next six months, including activities, timelines, and deliverables.

The meeting also included discussions on communication and management plans, with a focus on monitoring and reporting, establishing a common data space, and setting up a steering committee. These efforts will help to ensure that the project is well-coordinated and that all partners are working towards common goals.

Overall, the kick-off meeting for BIOECO-UP was a productive and collaborative event, setting the stage for the next phase of the project. By bringing together experts from different fields and countries, the project is well-positioned to make significant progress towards creating a more sustainable and efficient bioeconomy in Central Europe.
