Bioeconomy as a Tool for Addressing Climate Change: Hynek Roubík Presents in the Czech Senate
On September 23rd 2025, BRT Director Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hynek Roubík was invited to the Czech Senate in the upper house of the Parliament of the Czech Republic to deliver a keynote presentation on the role of bioeconomy as a strategic tool in addressing climate change. In his address to senators and senior policymakers, Dr. Roubík emphasized that bioeconomy is not just a scientific concept, but a practical framework for transforming energy, agriculture, and industry. He underlined four key points:
-
Reducing emissions – Bioeconomy offers carbon-neutral alternatives to fossil fuels and plastics.
-
Sectoral transformation – Beyond energy, it reshapes agriculture, forestry, industry, and waste management.
-
Economic opportunity – Bioeconomy already employs over 18 million people in the EU and brings growth to rural regions.
-
Political responsibility – Countries that invest in bioeconomy today will lead tomorrow in climate action, competitiveness, and energy security.
Drawing on international good practices, from bioplastics in Scandinavia to bioenergy in Germany and biochar initiatives in Africa, Dr. Roubík showed how bioeconomy can connect climate mitigation with economic growth and social development.
The presentation concluded with a strong message:
“The future will not be fossil. The future will be bioeconomical.”
His contribution sparked lively discussion in the Senate about how the Czech Republic can accelerate its own National Bioeconomy Strategy, align with the European Green Deal, and position itself as a leader in sustainable innovation.
