BRT at the ALFA Networking Event in Denmark
BRT Senior Researcher Associate Professor Dr. Yelizaveta Chernysh recently participated as an invited speaker at the ALFA hybrid networking event “Green Energy Connection: Biogas, Biomethane and Beyond”, held on April 2, 2025, in Denmark.
The ALFA project, funded by the EU through the Horizon Europe programme, aims to promote the implementation of biogas systems in the livestock sector. ALFA is focused on unlocking the potential of biogas production in animal farming to encourage the broader use of renewable energy sources and increase the share of bioenergy, while also reducing emissions from untreated manure and supporting the creation of new jobs and income in the livestock industry.
Dr. Chernysh was invited as a guest speaker at one of the networking events of this project. The event brought together experts and innovators from across Europe to discuss sustainable energy solutions and foster cross-border cooperation in the field of green energy. The main focus was on exploring the potential of biogas, biomethane, and related technologies in supporting the EU's transition to clean energy.
She delivered a presentation titled “Pros and Cons of Both – Biogas and Fossil Substitute (Natural Gas)”, highlighting the distinct roles these two energy sources play in today’s energy landscape. She outlined the key benefits and limitations of biogas and natural gas, offering insights into their environmental, economic, and infrastructural impacts.
Her presentation also examined the biogas sectors in the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Ukraine, showcasing how each country is navigating its own path toward renewable energy:
-
The Czech Republic stands out with a well-established network of biogas plants and robust support for renewable energy.
-
Slovakia is integrating anaerobic digestion technologies into its municipal waste management strategies.
-
Ukraine, while facing challenges related to wartime, infrastructure, and investment, has significant untapped potential in biogas production.
All three countries share a common recognition of biogas as a key contributor to energy security and environmental sustainability in the region. The event underscored the importance of knowledge exchange and regional collaboration in scaling up green energy technologies and advancing Europe's climate goals.
