Introducing BRT’s new PhD student - Manvendra Kumar

Recently, the BRT welcomed new PhD student Manvendra Kumar. Read all about his firsthand account detailing his background and aspirations below!

From Curiosity to Commitment

It all started with a question: What if waste could power our future? Growing up in India, where cultural diversity thrives alongside environmental challenges, I was often struck ?by the contrast between human activity and its impact on nature. This curiosity shaped my academic choices and led me to explore the intersection of waste management and renewable energy. Fast forward to today, I am a first-year PhD student in the BioResources and Technology (BRT) Division at the Czech University of Life Sciences, Prague (CZU). My journey to this point has been filled with challenges, breakthroughs, and a lot of learning—but the goal remains constant: to make renewable energy accessible and sustainable for everyone.

Lessons From the Lab and Beyond

My academic path began at the University of Delhi, where I studied Zoology. This foundational science was a springboard into Environmental Sciences, which I pursued at Himachal Pradesh University, Shimla. It was here that I first encountered the intricacies of waste management—its challenges, and more importantly, its untapped potential.

One of the pivotal moments in my career came when I worked at a wastewater treatment plant in Baddi, Himachal Pradesh. For two years, I explored the processes of nitrification and anaerobic digestion, turning waste into something valuable. These hands-on experiences taught me that every challenge is an opportunity to innovate.

In 2022, I joined CZU Prague’s Faculty of Agrobiology to specialize in digestate treatment. Digestate—a nutrient-rich byproduct of biogas production—often ends up as an environmental burden. My research focused on converting it into a valuable fertilizer and nutrient recovry. This work combined field experiments, pilot plant operations, and countless hours in the lab.

Now, as a PhD student with the BRT, I’m taking this expertise further. My research centers on intensifying anaerobic digestion by combining different waste streams. The aim is simple but ambitious: to enhance biogas production, making it more efficient and affordable. This aligns with my broader mission to promote renewable energy and sustainable practices worldwide.

Why My Research Matters

Biogas offers a powerful solution to two pressing problems: waste management and energy generation. By harnessing anaerobic digestion, we can reduce the burden on landfills while creating a clean energy source. However, challenges remain—chief among them is efficiency. My work addresses these challenges by exploring new combinations of organic waste and optimizing the digestion process. The goal is to make biogas production scalable and affordable, especially for communities that lack access to renewable energy.

A Glimpse Into the Future

As I continue my research, I’m looking at ways to integrate this knowledge into actionable projects. My dream is to establish community-driven biogas plants that not only manage waste but also generate energy and economic opportunities for local people.

Recommendations for Action

  1. Collaboration Is Key: I invite researchers, policymakers, and industry leaders to join hands in scaling up renewable energy solutions.
  2. Public Awareness: Education campaigns can help communities see the value of waste as a resource.
  3. Accessible Technology: Simplifying biogas plant designs will make them more adaptable in rural and urban settings alike.

This journey is about more than just research. It’s about creating change—turning waste into wealth, challenges into opportunities, and ideas into impact. Every experiment, every breakthrough, brings us closer to a cleaner, greener future. If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that sustainability isn’t just a goal—it’s a responsibility. And with the right blend of innovation and determination, we can all play a part in shaping a better tomorrow. Let’s start today. Together.
