Meet our new intern - Marina Salel
To broaden and develop our teams’ collaborative skills while offering visiting students the chance to expand their scientific networks and gain cultural experiences, BRT encourages students to join our team for internship opportunities. These internships aim to facilitate idea exchange, foster professional growth, and create opportunities for collaboration. Meet the new intern joining our team from the United States, Marina Salel!
Hi everyone! My name is Marina, and I’m joining the BioResources and Technology Division (BRT) as an intern. I recently graduated from Texas A&M University with a Bachelor’s degree in Biology (Gig’em!) and spent a year abroad at the Université de Lausanne.
I was born in France but grew up in Texas, so I’ve always been somewhere in between the two. Being part of both cultures has shaped how I see things. I'm used to adapting to new environments and working with people from different backgrounds, which is something I really enjoy and value.
During my studies, I gained experience across several areas of biology. I worked on research projects involving murine models to study bone regeneration, and explored cancer biology during my time at UNIL. I also had the opportunity to participate in an NSF-funded research experience in Kenya, where I worked on trait-based ecological analyses and field data. These experiences exposed me to different approaches to research, from controlled lab experiments to more field-based and data-driven work, and really shaped how I think about biological systems as a whole.
What stood out to me about BRT is how the research connects directly to real-world challenges. It’s not just about understanding systems, but also about applying that knowledge in a way that has a tangible impact, especially in areas like sustainability. I was also really drawn to the diversity of projects and the international environment, which makes it a great place to learn from different perspectives.
During my internship with a lab research focus, I’ll be working in the lab on optimizing protocols for soil biotesting. I’m excited to get more hands-on experience with method development and to better understand how experimental work can support environmental applications.
Outside of science, I love spending time outdoors: hiking, camping, cold-plunging and taking care of animals. I spend a lot of my time traveling, which has made me appreciate being in international environments even more.
As for what’s next, I’m planning to pursue graduate studies and continue on a research-oriented path. I’m still exploring exactly where I want to specialize, but I’m particularly interested in work that combines strong scientific research with real-world impact and sustainability. I see this experience at BRT as a way to broaden my perspective and build on my current skills in a new context.
I’m really excited to be part of the team and looking forward to everything I’ll learn during my time here.
