Visiting Internship Insights - NONO WANDJI Brice Léonel
To broaden and develop our teams’ collaborative skills while offering visiting students the chance to expand their scientific networks and gain cultural experiences, BRT encourages students to join our team for internship opportunities. These internships aim to facilitate idea exchange, foster professional growth, and create opportunities for collaboration.
Recently, we hosted NONO WANDJI Brice Léonel, a student from Cameroon. Read his introductory blog here.
Enjoy reading about his experience with BRT!
I am very happy with the time spent with the BRT during my internship. As a trainee, I acquired valuable knowledge in the field of biomethanation and in the study of the biogas potential of residues from the bioconversion of biomass by black soldier fly larvae. Under Dr. Viktoriia Chuber’s supervision, I learned the Kjeldahl method for determining the protein and nitrogen content of biomass. Moreover, I learned how to use a spectrophotometer to determine the amount of ammonia (NH3), phosphorus (P), and chemical oxygen demand (COD) of a liquid substrate. I also learned how to set up and monitor a biomethanation experiment, from assembling the bioreactors to collecting and analyzing the data.
In addition to laboratory work, I attended the research methodology course (taught by Assoc. Prof Dr. Hynek Roubik), which gave me new tips for literature research and helped me better understand the process of writing and publishing scientific articles.
Beyond my own research, I took an interest in some of the work conducted by the BRT team, notably the research on alternative valorization pathways for phosphogypsum. This motivated me to develop research project ideas on the valorization of phosphogypsum in the field of sustainable energy production. This interest is driven by my passion for renewable energies and sustainable technologies.
This internship period at BRT not only improved my English level but also strengthened my self-confidence. This experience at BRT will be very beneficial for my research career. I sincerely hope to continue with a postdoctoral position, in research on valorization methods for phosphogypsum in sustainable energy production.
I am very grateful to the members of BRT team for welcoming us during these last two months. A special thanks to Dr. Chama Theodore Ketuama, who guided and supported me during my stay in Prague, to Dr. Viktoriia Chuber for her availability and support in the laboratory, and to Assoc. Prof Dr. Hynek Roubik for sparing no effort to ensure my time in the laboratory and at BRT team went very well. I will never forget my experience at BRT team, as it will be invaluable for my future careers. I also feel very lucky to have spent the last two months in Prague, an incredible city with so much to offer.
