Visiting Internship Insights – Viktoriia Pidnebesna
To broaden and develop our teams’ collaborative skills while offering visiting students the chance to expand their scientific networks and gain cultural experiences, BRT encourages students to join our team for internship opportunities. These internships aim to facilitate idea exchange, foster professional growth, and create opportunities for collaboration.
Recently, we hosted Viktoriia Pidnebesna, a student from Ukraine. Read her introductory blog HERE.
Enjoy reading about her experience with BRT!
I am very pleased with the two months I spent interning with the BRT. During this time, I learned a great deal of new and interesting information about biogas production under anaerobic conditions, as well as vermicomposting. I also acquired valuable practical skills while working in the laboratory.
Under the guidance of Dr. Viktoriia Chubur, I was trained in monitoring and analyzing anaerobic digestion processes for biogas production. Together, we restarted the vermicomposter after the winter by adding paper and organic waste, and continued to monitor its operation. The result of vermicomposting is not only vermicompost itself but also water-soluble nutrients, which can be extracted as vermiwash - an excellent, nutrient-rich organic fertilizer and soil conditioner. Dr. Chubur taught me how to determine the concentrations of phosphorus (P), nitrites (NO2), and nitrates (NO3) in the vermiwash using a spectrophotometer, and how to measure pH using a pH meter.
In addition, this internship greatly improved my English language skills, which is very valuable to me for future endeavors. It also gave me the opportunity to make new acquaintances, boosted my confidence and independence. Beyond my work experience, I had the chance to explore and enjoy the beautiful city of Prague, with its incredible architecture, atmosphere, and culture.
I am sincerely grateful to the entire BRT team for giving me the opportunity to complete this internship, work in the laboratory, and gain valuable knowledge, experience, and memories for my future studies and professional growth!
