Paving the way for setting up scalable, green hydrogen-based economic models for local communities in the Danube Region
Project duration: 01.09.2024 – 31.08.2025
Programme: INTERREG Danube Region Programme
Coordinator: University of Pécs (HU)
Partner Organisations: Energy and Climate Agency of Podravje (SI), Czech University of Life Sciences (CZ), University of Applied Sciences Landshut (DE)
CZU Role: Project Partner
The H2SCALE project supports the transition toward renewable energy by fostering the development of local hydrogen ecosystems in the Danube Region, particularly in Hungary, Slovenia, the Czech Republic, and Germany. In response to EU climate and energy goals, the project focuses on mapping the production capacities and consumption needs for green hydrogen, integrating hydrogen into local energy and transport systems, and identifying investment opportunities.
The initiative also addresses knowledge gaps and top-down approaches in hydrogen planning by promoting stakeholder engagement at the municipal level. It aims to strengthen the innovation capacity of regions, involve local actors across the public and private sectors, and increase public acceptance of hydrogen technologies.
The project builds on insights from the previous I3Hydrogen proposal, further developing its approach to better reflect stakeholder needs through participatory planning and enhanced regional collaboration. H2SCALE contributes to the objectives of the EU Strategy for the Danube Region (EUSDR) by supporting the integration of renewable energy and hydrogen technologies in Central Europe.
The BioResources & Technology (BRT) team leads activities in the Czech Republic, including stakeholder mapping, awareness building, and preparation of strategic inputs for hydrogen integration into rural and urban systems.
Importantly, the outcomes of H2SCALE may guide the direction of future EU investments into hydrogen initiatives at the regional level. For this reason, we warmly invite interested stakeholders to contribute to the ongoing mapping and consultation process.
